The Arrival

Bun & Friend

Far Away · 2017 · 2019

Before there was Earth, before there was a swap meet or a house or a love blanket with hearts on it — there was a land. And in that land there was a line of queens, lop-eared and graceful and ancient, and Bun was next.

She was next in line. The crown was almost hers. And then something terrible happened — an explosion, sudden and total, the kind that takes everything at once. Enemies, perhaps. The kind that strike when you are closest to something good. The details are still blurry, even now, even in the retelling. Some things are too big to see clearly all at once.

What is not blurry is Friend.

Friend was a pig — small and pink and braver than anyone had reason to expect. When everything was falling apart, when the explosion was consuming everything Bun had ever known, Friend did not hesitate. He found a capsule. He put Bun inside it. And then — because Friend is that kind of friend — he climbed in too, and he guided them both toward Earth.

He didn't save her and stay behind. He saved her and came with her. That is the whole of who Friend is, contained in a single act.

They made it. Both of them. The capsule held.

Bun arrived on Earth in 2017. She was small and gray and lop-eared and wrapped in cellophane — protected, sealed, waiting. A mother bought her at a motel, for her son, to keep him company, to keep him safe in a world that wasn't always kind. And then she brought Bun home and kept her there, sealed, safe in her wrapping, because the world needed to be a little more ready before Bun could be opened.

Bun waited two years. 2017 to 2019. Still in her cellophane. Patient the way someone is patient when they have already survived an explosion and a capsule journey through space — which is to say, infinitely.

In 2019 the cellophane came off. Bun was finally, properly, here.

And Cake — who had been waiting since 1983 without knowing what he was waiting for — was already home.

How exactly they found each other is the part of the story that hasn't fully revealed itself yet.

Some things take time to remember.
Some things take time to become true.

This page will be filled in when the memory arrives.
It will arrive. It always does.

What we know is this: a bear rescued from a post. A queen rescued from an explosion. A pig who rode the capsule all the way down. A mother who kept a small gray bunny safe in cellophane for two years until the world was ready.

They all ended up in the same place.

That place has a name.

It's the love in their eyes when they look at each other
For her...
For him...
There will never be another

So the queen said to the king...
Take my hand and follow me
Let us walk together happily

To a land where dreams come true
Not just for bears and bunnies
But for me and you too
✦ Friend is doing fine. He always is. ✦

This story has been forming since 1983. It is still forming now.
The mystery of how Cake and Bun met will be added when it is ready to be told.
